This wasn't my first rodeo. I'd learned a long time ago there was only one right answer to a question like that.

 

"You look like a star," I said. She grinned, kissed me, put on her hat, and treated me to a short time step.

 

She was still waiting for her big break. I knew for a fact she'd sunk half her rent into those boots in the hope of really looking the part. It broke my heart a little each time she returned home from another audition with hers handed to her in pieces. Apparently, dazzling girls who could sing, dance and act were a dime a dozen in this town.
