Reluctant Patient Shoe
"What kind of doctor are you, anyway?"
We didn't know each other very well, and we already had kind of a strange relationship. I'd been trying to get her to open up a little, but she was nervous. That wasn't unusual.
"Let's just talk," I said, putting down my tools and trying to be less intimidating.
It was the right thing to do. She relaxed a little, and asked if I enjoyed my work.
"It's the most fun I can have standing up," I said.
She smiled and relaxed a little more. This was the opening I'd been looking for.

Every shoe tells a story — A gallery had arranged a show in conjunction with a dental convention, so I created a Chattering Teeth Shoe, a Tooth Fairy Shoe, and this rather ambiguous Reluctant Patient shoe.
It started out as just a Reluctant Patient Shoe — which I have now re-named it — buttoned, buckled, zipped, hooked and locked up within an inch of her life. I'd made that open toe look like a mouth, but then I noticed that the color and the shape made it look like something else as well. I love that no one is quite sure whether the doctor is a dentist or a gynecologist...
